On May 2, Health Minister Adolfo Rubinstein hosted an international seminar where he reiterated the need for a Health Technology Evaluation Agency (AGNET for its acronym in Spanish). Rubinstein was addressing a large audience of experts from Chile, Colombia, Canada and Spain, as well as representatives of the Pan-American Health Organization and the Health Technology Assessment International (HTAI), in addition to public health and social welfare agents. Meanwhile, the bill establishing the agency which was filed by the ruling party is still in the Senate, although it was reactivated in mid-April.

Rubinstein explained that the AGNET is a vital step towards the creation of a healthcare framework endowed with social legitimacy and capable of providing the system with greater equity. The link between the evaluation of new health technologies and budgetary resources was also the central issue at a Latin American forum organized by HTAI on April 29 and 30. It was in this context, that the Minister outlined the value of HTAI’s input for the development of a proposal based on “the best evidence.”

The proposal was supported by the Argentine Chamber of Medicinal Specialties, which considered that it is of key importance to respect the sequence between product registration and the agency’s evaluation. One of the topics currently under discussion in the Senate is the point at which the AGNET should intervene in the process.
