Uruguay and Mexico convene an international conference to discuss the situation in Venezuela
1 febrero 2019

Amid a political struggle between the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and the self-proclaimed interim president of the country, Juan Guaidó, the government of Uruguay invited January 30 the international community to a conference to find a solution to the crisis in Venezuela.  The meeting will be organized together with Mexico February 7 in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, and more than ten countries and several international organizations are expected to participate. Meanwhile, the European Parliament January 31 recognised Juan Guaidó as the legitimate interim president of Venezuela. At the national level, new demonstrations are set to take place next Saturday, February 2, in support of both Maduro and Guaidó.

The governments of Uruguay and Mexico, given their neutral position towards Venezuela – non-intervention in the country’s internal affairs policy-, decided to organize the summit.  The aim is to involve all relevant actors in Venezuelan politics to begin a new peace process.  So far, neither Maduro nor Guaidó have expressed themselves on the matter.

On the other hand, the European Parliament passed a resolution with 439 votes in favour, 104 against and 88 abstentions, recognising Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela. In addition, it gives its “absolute” support to the roadmap proposed by Guaidó.  The president of the institution, Antonio Tajani, said: “faced with current events, we cannot remain silent”.  Although the European Parliament’s resolutions are not binding, these exert additional pressure on Nicolás Maduro.

At the national level, Venezuelans marched January 30 to protest against Maduro’s administration.  The demonstrators supported Guaidó’s transitional government and called for free elections and an end to usurpation.  In the meantime, Maduro said he is willing to call for early legislative elections – without specifying a date – as a way to solve the crisis “through a popular vote”. Guaidó has not yet given his opinion on the matter.
