SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainable development. Heads of State and representatives of Latin American countries met in Guatemala November 15 and 16 for the XXVI Ibero-American Summit, which addressed issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2030. Participants highlighted the importance of encouraging the proliferation of green economies and promoting gender equity in the workplace. They also published a document with recommendations for the countries of the region to fulfill the SDGs. The Executive and Legislative branches of Latin America are expected in the coming months to implement measures and regulations based on the recommendations proposed at the summit.

With regard to the sustainable development of economies, the countries agreed to create public-private partnerships to encourage innovative ventures, the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises, greater integration into global value chains and the reduction of the informal economy.

Another key issue discussed was the implementation of policies aimed at guaranteeing gender equity in the workplace, notably equal pay for women and men performing the same duties. In addition, countries pledged to make progress in driving the economic and social inclusion of people with disabilities.

Next steps

Governments in the region are expected to implement executive measures to promote sustainable development in Latin America in the coming months. They will also promote the adoption and implementation of laws that guarantee equality and prohibit discrimination against women in the workplace.
