On Tuesday, November 27, the Deputies´ Finance Committee continued the debate on the bill that promotes the use of electronic documents and signatures (Exp. 8466). The debate was attended by Executive Branch representatives, who explained the changes introduced by the Economy Committee, focusing on the new powers that the Ministry Secretariat of the Presidency (SEGPRES) will have to control the use of these instruments. Because Congress enters its monthly recess next week, the committee will continue with its debate in the second week of December.

The session was attended by the Undersecretary of Economy, Ignacio Toro, and the head of the Digital Government Division of SEGPRES, Andres Bustamante. They were in charge of presenting the modifications introduced and passed by the Economy Committee. They explained that “the bill extends the prerogatives of the Executive Branch in the control of this mechanism,” which will “ensure greater predictability and neutrality” in the use of electronic signatures.

Nonetheless, the Committee decided to postpone voting on the bill. They stated that they will be seeking an additional session to analyze its technical feasibility, specifically in terms of security and operational continuity.  As such, they will continue with their debate in the second week of December. It is expected that the bill will be passed and then introduced to the Deputies floor.
