Costa Rican President set for France visit to reaffirm his commitment to OECD
9 noviembre 2018

On Friday, November 9th, President of Costa Rica Carlos Alvarado will travel to France to reaffirm the country’s commitment to forming part of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). As part of the trip, President Alvarado will meet with OECD’s Council on November 13th, composed of representatives of the 37 member countries. He is also set to meet with OECD Secretary General Angel Gurría to discuss progress in Costa Rica’s accession process.

Despite the country currently being at the trickiest stage of the application process, Alvarado is confident that Costa Rica will succeed in becoming the 38th member of OECD. Although domestic affairs have kept Alvarado busy recently, it is a priority for his administration to be endorsed by the remaining ten commissions (out of 22) to finally conclude the process that began in 2015.

The groups that analyze taxes, insurance and private pensions have already approved Costa Rica before, so now Alvarado will meet with OECD directors of Education, Employment, and Social Affairs. As part of his European tour, the president will take part in activities organised by his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron; and will attend a meeting at the Political Observatory of Latin America and the Caribbean (Opalc). On November 16th, President Alvarado is set to travel to Guatemala to participate in the XVI Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government.
