Labor inclusion. On October 3th, the Women20 summit, a G20 engagement group, concluded in Buenos Aires with the participation of representatives from the United Nations (UN) and the International Labor Organization. The W20 meeting concluded with the issuance of a series of recommendations to increase women’s participation in workplaces by 25 percent by 2025. These include plans to promote formal work for women, to equate paternity leave with maternity leave, and to eliminate workplace violence. These guidelines will be considered November 30th at the G20 Leaders Summit so that the forum’s member countries can define public policies to comply with the recommendations.

The W20 mainly promotes the inclusion of women in the labor market and the elimination of wage differences between men and women. To this end, they propose that the G20 countries, which account for 85% of global GDP and 75% of international trade, implement these recommendations in the form of national public policies. The W20 recommendations are framed within the Sustainable Development Goals (SDS), with an emphasis on gender equality plans, decent work and inequality reduction.

During the W20 meeting, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, the executive director of UN Women, added her support to the considerations of the W20 summit. She pointed out that the UN will accompany the proposed measures to eliminate the gender wage gap. At the same time, she indicated that it is necessary to increase the participation of the female labor force in the technological industry and affirmed that wage inequality is a “theft for women”.

Next steps

The G20 Leaders Summit, which will take place in Argentina November 30th and December 1st, will study the recommendations to define how to implement them. Additionally, in 2019, the UN will deepen the fulfillment of these objectives through the “Win-Win” Program, which involves national private companies to promote gender equality and women’s economic empowerment.
