Labor

Labor´s future. On September 7th, the Ministers of Labour and Education of the G20 countries requested to their governments to promote dialogue with the private sector to prepare citizens for the jobs of the future in a digital environment. On December 1st, G20 leaders are expected to commit to negotiations with businesses and trade unions to promote professional education, internships, and first job programs aimed at improving workers’ skills.

From this space, the ministers highlighted the importance of facilitating the transition between formal education and the world of work. They insisted on the need for this articulation to take place in a coordinated manner between companies and states, promoting tutoring, vocational orientation, internships, first employment programs and attractive professional options for young professionals. They considered it central that these programs and trainings be focused on the development of digital skills, incorporating adaptability, resilience and learning to learn as a means of permanent and inclusive improvement and renewal of skills in a context of continuous change.

From Latin America, Argentina, Brazil and Mexico participate in the G20. In the rest of the region, these policies will be promoted through agreements at the level of the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament. On September 7th, the forum, which brings together legislators from all Latin American countries, raised the possibility of creating a subcommittee to study these issues closely, in line with the countries of the region and the guidelines of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Next Steps

The ILO is working on a report on the future of work that will be published in January 2019. The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, through the G20 and Parlatino, are expected to promote negotiations between governments, congresses, private companies and workers’ organizations to coordinate training, internships and first employment programs that facilitate the incorporation of young people into the formal labor market with digital skills and the ability to perform in multiple scenarios
