The new head of the Ministry of Health (Minsa), Abel Hernán Salinas Rivas, announced that he will focus on the development of drug policies and medical technology in order to meet the most urgent needs of the sector. “We need a powerful institute to improve our purchasing system,” he said during his official presentation before former ministers of the sector, hospital directors, union representatives (professional associations and unions) and representatives of international cooperation bodies.

He also indicated that the Ministry of Health’s general direction of medicines will become a powerful body, so as to regulate the pharmaceutical industry. The objective is to strengthen the supervision of generic drugs so that quality, safety and accessibility to the population are guaranteed.

“The general direction of medicines is small and lacking resources, we must turn it into a powerful organism that can regulate and supervise medicines, supplies, food and medical technology. So that he can sit at the table to regulate the pharmaceutical industry, the medical equipment industry and the food industry,”, he said.

In that regard, there are medicines in the Peruvian market that have not complied with the corresponding regulatory process of the sanitary registry, because in previous years the positive administrative silence was applied: when the institution that authorized a sanitary registry did not issue a response in time, the register was considered as having been granted.
