MEX. COFEPRIS TAKES THE LEAD AMONG INTERNATIONAL REGULATORS
4 enero 2018

The Mexican Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk (Comisión Federal para la Protección contra Riesgos Sanitarios or Cofepris) will lead the Pan American Health Organization’s (PAHO) Secretariat of National Regulatory Authorities of Regional Reference (NRAr) from 2018-2019.

The Cofepris stated that it will be the body tasked with coordinating the work of the NRAr, which is made up of Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, and the United States. The goal, as specified by the Mexican agency, is to “forge ahead with regulatory standardization throughout the region,” as well as to increase access to safe medications.

The federal body reported that during 2018, it will provide continuity to the strategy to release generic and groundbreaking medications, strengthen the development of the medical device sector, promote clinical research, and regulate cannabis-derived products for therapeutic use.

Similarly, Cofepris reported that its formal participation as a full member of the Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme (Esquema de Cooperación de Inspección Farmacéutica or PIC/S), which brings together the most important regulatory agencies in the world, began on Monday, January 1st.

It emphasizes that the foregoing “consists of the recognition of the sanitary regulation tasks designed, implemented, and monitored by the Federal Commission which comply with the parameters for the best international practices to enhance public health.”
