Last week, a draft describing the creation of a National Sanitary Technology Assessment Agency (Agencia Nacional de Evaluación de Tecnologías de Salud or AGNET) began circulating within the framework of President Mauricio Macri’s announcement of a labor reform measure. The aim of the AGNET is to conduct studies on medications, medical products, and instruments, as well as on clinical, surgical, and other techniques and procedures used to prevent, create, or rehabilitate health. The purpose of the agency will be to assess which medical products and procedures will be funded by the Argentine state.

The agency’s functions include analyzing and reviewing scientific information related to the assessment of sanitary technologies and disseminating this information among professionals and public, private, and social security sanitary services; determining how to assess and disseminate recommendations and sanitary technology use protocols; and promoting scientific research to optimize the methodology needed to assess sanitary technologies.

This measure was spearheaded by the Executive Branch when it sent the bill of law creating the AGNET (File Nº 0082-S-2016) to the Senate.
