This past August 24-25, the Peruvian Ministry of Health participated in policy dialogues on the human papilloma virus and cervical cancer at the High-Level Meeting on Health and the Economy at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum, which was held in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. In addition, opportunities available within the APEC to work in a collaborative manner on common initiatives to ensure healthy economies were identified.

Several topics were addressed during the meeting, including the reduction of HPV and cervical cancer; returns on investments in adolescent mental, physical, and sexual health; the effectiveness of the HPV vaccine; tests to detect HPV to help shape prevention policies; and the promotion of collaboration among APEC member countries’ departments of health.

As reported by the Ministry of Health of Peru, the measures to be adopted following the approval of the next APEC Leaders’ Declaration —scheduled to take place in Vietnam next November— will be considered when drafting national public policies to address the issue of cervical cancer.
