Costa Rica seeks to create National Cancer Advisory Board
28 julio 2017

The Assembly is seeking to pass a bill which would create a specific authority – under the Ministry of Health – to provide counselling, advice and emotional support to cancer patients. Its main tasks would be to organize, coordinate and plan all things connected to the comprehensive treatment of cancer patients, which would standardize a comprehensive approach to the second highest cause of death in 2015 according to the World Health Organization.

The National Cancer Advisory Board will have 13 leading authorities lead by the Minister of Health, and representatives from private organization will be elected every two years with a chance of reelection.

The Ministry will also register cancer NGOs and be advised by the newly-created board regarding medical attention, health policies, articulation of public and private sectors, cooperation agreements or modifications to the current legislation.

The initiative awaits debate in commission before being debated by the Assembly.
